St Joseph red from Domaine Pierre Gonon

Vintage: 2018

🍇: 100% Syrah

. 

👀: In the glass, it's a dark, almost garnet red.

.

👃: The nose is like a stroll through the undergrowth after the rain. There's black pepper, blackcurrant, a bit of black olive, and that carnal, almost animal note. In the background, a hint of violet and tapenade.

. 

👄: The attack is supple, juicy, and disarmingly frank. Then the body rises, dense but not heavy. The tannins are polished, just the right amount of firmness, without trying to dominate.  This is a wine that walks a fine line between power and delicacy. The acidity is straightforward, leading to a mouth-watering, slightly smoky, almost bloody finish.

👀: Dans le verre, c’est un rouge sombre, presque grenat.

👃: Le nez, c’est une balade dans les sous-bois après la pluie. Y’a du poivre noir, du cassis, un peu d’olive noire, et cette note charnelle, presque animale. En filigrane, un petit quelque chose de violette et de tapenade.

👄 : L’attaque est souple, juteuse, d’une franchise désarmante. Puis la matière monte, dense mais pas lourde. Les tanins sont polis, serrés juste comme il faut, sans vouloir dominer. C’est un vin qui danse sur un fil entre puissance et délicatesse. L’acidité, droite emmène tout ça jusqu’à une finale salivante, un brin fumée, presque sanguine.

🇬🇧Domain Description

Here in Mauves, on the slopes of Saint-Joseph, the Gonon brothers work the vineyard like tuning an instrument: by ear, with patience and respect for the natural rhythm. No flashiness, no special effects. Just the Syrah that tells the story of its terroir, between granite, warm wind, and burning pebbles. A craftsman's Syrah, exuding truth, candor, and restraint.

In their wines, I hear a breath. It smells of wet stone, black pepper, olives, a hint of summer rain on a dirt road. This is the Northern Rhône I like: not body-building, not too tame either. Just the right amount of muscle, nerve, and above all, soul.

Drinking a Gonon is like rewatching an old Lelouch film: no artifice, just the beauty of time passing and a job well done. Every sip is a pure pleasure.

🇫🇷Description du Domaine

Ici, à Mauves, sur les pentes du Saint-Joseph, les frères Gonon bossent la vigne comme on accorde un instrument : à l’oreille, avec patience et respect du rythme naturel. Pas de tape-à-l’œil, pas d’effet spécial. Juste la Syrah qui raconte son terroir, entre granit, vent chaud et cailloux brûlants. Une Syrah d’artisan, qui respire le vrai, la franchise et la retenue.

Dans leurs vins, j’entends un souffle. Ça sent la pierre mouillée, le poivre noir, l’olive, un peu la pluie d’été sur un chemin de terre. C’est du Rhône nord comme j’aime : pas bodybuildé, pas trop sage non plus. Juste ce qu’il faut de muscle, de nerf, et surtout d’âme.

Boire un Gonon, c’est comme revoir un vieux film de Lelouch : pas d’artifice, juste la beauté du temps qui passe et du travail bien fait. Chaque gorgée, c'est un pur plaisir.
